Beyond the work
The interests that feed the rest of it. The same threads that run through the science and the art.
Squares, scribes, and compasses
My grandfather and great-grandfather were master woodworkers. At fourteen I was given an antique architectural drafting kit, and with those squares, scribes, straight edges, and compasses I first explored the geometry and classic design motifs that later became my art.
Playing by ear
Improvisation, in music and in theory, is one of the influences I trace directly into how I design patterns and solve problems.
Attention, from the inside
A long-standing practice, and not unrelated to the research: I've spent years in an EEG lab studying the neurophysiology of meditation and cognition.
Away from the screen
Nature, quiet, and the space to think are where a good deal of the work actually gets figured out.
