Recursia®
Generative art built from geometry, the neuroscience of vision, and code. The same fascination with perception that drives the science, rendered to be beautiful.

How it started
It began with geometry. My grandfather and great-grandfather were master woodworkers, and at fourteen I was given an antique architectural drafting kit, squares, scribes, straight edges, compasses. With it I explored first-principles geometry, classic design motifs, and how color changes the way we read the boundaries of a pattern.
Years later, preparing for a research internship, I set out to learn programming by drawing the geometry I already understood: first single dots on the screen, then lines, then polygons, then spirals, then fully dynamic patterns. Around the same time a required "Introduction to Digital Art" course taught me the craft of the tools, and late one night in the lab, chasing a good grade, I stumbled onto a very strange design. That was the beginning.
I use my knowledge of the human visual system to build novel illusions, including the one behind the Recursia logo. The work sits at the intersection of the things that have shaped me: neuroscience, perception, optical illusions, logic, abstract mathematics, computer science, improvisational music, meditation, time in nature, and woodworking.
That idea names the work. Look closely at most of the pieces and you'll find hidden, multi-scaled patterns: a base image, replicated countless times, revealing itself differently depending on how far away you stand, a little like a fractal. Hence Recursia.
